Hear it for yourself
Pick a source. Press play. Add colour.
The most neutral character. Adds density without colouring - stays composed even fully turned up.
01 / Choose your source
02 / Shape the sound
Press Play, then adjust the sliders or try a starting point. Use Bypass to compare with the original. You can also load your own audio.Drag a knob up or down to turn it, hold shift for fine control, double click to reset it. At Process 0 with both trims at zero the plugin is bit transparent and its header says so — that is the A/B against the untouched file. Drop your own audio anywhere on the panel.
A little weight. A lot of presence.
Give your sound
some
Tape colour that follows your playing. Bring weight to drums, presence to a vocal, or a little cohesion to the mix bus.
01
Choose the character.
Five voicings, from composed and clean to fuller mids and darker weight. Start with the one that suits your source.
02
Drive the tape.
Input Trim sets how hard you hit it. Quiet passages stay nearly clean; louder moments grow harmonics and compression.
03
Find the balance.
Set Process for colour, then Mix for the blend. Match the output and compare with the original.
Inside the signal chain
The harmonic generator is level normalised: the signal is divided by its own envelope, harmonics are produced with Chebyshev polynomials, and the result is scaled back up. That places the generated content exactly on the second and third multiple of the fundamental, rather than as broadband dirt in between.
Record and reproduce equalisation nearly cancel. The highs are lifted before the saturation and taken back out afterwards, so the net response stays close to flat, but the highs went through the saturation on the way. That is real tape behaviour, and it is the only part you hear.
Because the whole process is level dependent, Input Trim is a tone control rather than a level control: it decides how hard the signal hits the tape, and therefore how much colour there is to have.
The 5 characters
One signal chain, five sets of coefficients. They are voicings of the same engine rather than five separate processors: pick the one that suits the source, then set how far it goes.
- Luminescent
- The most neutral. Stays composed even fully turned up.
- Iridescent
- The same magnetic character, with a fatter bottom and fuller mids.
- Radiant
- A firmer compression curve with midrange push.
- Luster
- Starts gentler than any of the others, and becomes as aggressive as Dark Essence towards full scale.
- Dark Essence
- The most aggressive. Widest frequency picture, and it damps sibilance dynamically: on a vocal it works as a de-esser that does not sound like one.
Inside Revenant
Harmonics where they belong
Chebyshev polynomials on a level-normalised signal put the generated content on the 2nd and 3rd harmonic of the fundamental, not as broadband dirt in between.
Brightness in three casts
Gold sits close to flat, Sapphire brighter, Opal warmer, easing the top end and favouring the bottom. The tilt scales with Process rather than being a fixed EQ.
Input Trim is a tone control
±10 dB deciding how hard the signal hits the tape. Because the whole process is level dependent, this is where you set how much colour there is to have, not where you set gain.
Linear phase oversampling
1x to 8x, 4x by default, through FIR half-band filters. More expensive than IIR, but Process blends the wet path back into the dry, and phase rotation there would comb filter instead of colour.
Mid/side with a Side amount
Process mid and side separately. At 0 % the sides stay untouched, saturation into the centre with the stereo image left alone; at 200 % they reach full amount at half the Process setting.
Auto Gain that stays out of the way
A deliberately sluggish RMS match between input and output, slow enough that the tape compression survives instead of being undone.
Bit transparent at zero
With Process at 0, trims flat, Mix at 100 % and Auto Gain off, the entire chain including oversampling is bypassed. Output equals input, bit for bit, and latency drops to zero.
Mix bus safe
Multi-mono processing with no coupled detector between left and right, so pushing a full mix does not smear transients or collapse the stereo image.
Put it on the mix bus.
